Willard Carlisle Butcher (born October 25, 1926, in Bronxville, New York) worked for Chase Manhattan Bank for 43 years and was its chief executive officer for the last ten before retiring.[1]
He graduated from Brown University Phi Beta Kappa in 1948. Butcher worked his way up from branch manager to head of Chase's international division, before being promoted in 1972 to president at the age of 46.[2] In 1981, he was hand-picked by David Rockefeller to succeed him as CEO.[3] Rockefeller said of him in Memoirs, "It's a pleasure to work with Bill". During his tenure, the bank suffered serious losses due to a series of bad loans; the company's board asked Butcher to step down early in favor of his president and chief operating officer, Thomas G. Labrecque.[3]
